The iPhone Duo — Apple’s first folding phone, $1,999 — went on sale this morning. By this afternoon, owners were posting photos of the inner screen failing right along the hinge: a bright line of pixels across one side of the fold. MacRumors reported the first cases today, and the photos have been spreading since.

I fix phones for a living, and I’ll be honest about my position here: nobody outside Apple has repaired one of these yet — they came out this morning. What I can do is read the reports carefully, separate what’s verified from what’s rumor, and tell you exactly what to do if your screen is one of the ones that cracks. On a phone where the screen alone is a $999 part, the order you do things in matters.

What we know — and what we don’t

What we know:

  • The Duo launched today, Friday, October 23, at $1,999.
  • MacRumors reported today that owners are posting photos of inner displays failing along the hinge — a bright line of pixels across one side of the screen.
  • One case out of Australia is the best documented so far: the owner says the screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, with no drops and nothing caught in the hinge. Moderators on r/iPhoneDuo verified that case — the damaged phone and its replacement, though not the cause.
  • That owner says they felt something under the glass before it cracked. Their Apple Store replaced the phone on the spot.
  • Droid-Life counted at least three separate Reddit threads about hinge cracks on launch day, and demo units in China have been photographed with similar damage — though nobody knows the backstory on those.

What we don’t know yet:

  • How widespread this is. A handful of reported cases is not a failure rate, and no failure rate exists yet.
  • What’s causing it. Anyone who tells you they know today is guessing.
  • What Apple will say. As of this writing, Apple hasn’t commented.

If yours cracks, do this — in this order

  1. Stop folding it. Leave it at whatever angle it’s at. Every open and close works that hinge, and a cracked inner screen doesn’t get better with exercise.
  2. Film it before you touch anything else. A short video showing the line of pixels, the rest of the phone’s condition, and how it opens is your evidence that this wasn’t a drop. Take photos too.
  3. Back it up now. iCloud or a computer, while the screen still works well enough to use. Screen failures can spread, and a phone you can’t unlock is a phone you can’t back up.
  4. Take it to an Apple Store in person — don’t mail it in. The one verified case was replaced on the spot, in a store, where staff could see for themselves there was no drop damage. A phone in a shipping box doesn’t make that argument for you.
  5. Don’t let anyone else open it first. No third-party screen swap, no “let me take a look inside” from a local shop, before Apple has seen it. You want Apple’s eyes on it in original condition.

What Apple owes you, in plain English

Every iPhone comes with a one-year warranty, and that warranty covers defects — a screen that fails along the hinge under normal use, with no drop and nothing caught in it, is the definition of what it’s for. That’s why the verified Australian case ended with a new phone instead of a bill.

Accidental damage is a different bucket, and the numbers are not small. MacRumors reported Apple’s pricing on October 14: an inner display replacement is $999 without AppleCare+. With AppleCare+ — which costs $399 for the Duo — that same screen is $99. The maximum “other damage” fee runs to $1,499. Those are US figures; confirm your region’s price with Apple.

So the math on AppleCare+ is suddenly less abstract: $399 plus $99 beats $999 if your screen ever needs replacing, whatever the cause. And if a store quotes you accidental-damage pricing on a phone that was never dropped, ask — politely, with your video ready — for it to be looked at again. If you bought on launch day, you’re also still inside the standard 14-day return window, which is leverage you won’t have in a month.

What not to do

Don’t peel the factory film off the inner screen. Don’t press on the crease to “test” it, and don’t keep opening and closing it to check whether the line is getting worse — you already know the answer you don’t want. And skip the third-party screen protectors for now: anything that adds thickness or pressure at the fold is a variable you don’t need while this is being figured out.

If yours is fine, protect the hinge like it’s the whole phone — because it is

The enemy of every folding screen is grit. When iFixit tore down Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 this week, they found its hinge “will struggle with anything under 1 mm” of debris — a different phone, but folding screens all share the same weakness. So: glance at the screen before you close it, never fold it shut on anything, give it its own pocket away from keys and coins, and if you buy a case, get one that covers the hinge, not just the backs.

FAQ

Is every iPhone Duo going to crack?
There’s no evidence of that. What’s verified is a handful of launch-day cases, one of them checked by r/iPhoneDuo’s moderators. There’s no failure rate yet, and Apple hasn’t commented. A $1,999 phone deserves scrutiny — it doesn’t deserve panic.

Will Apple fix it for free?
If it’s a defect from normal use, that’s what the one-year warranty covers — the verified case was replaced on the spot. If Apple decides it’s accidental damage, MacRumors’ reported pricing puts the inner screen at $999 without AppleCare+ or $99 with it. This is exactly why you film the phone’s condition before you go in.

I bought one today and it’s fine. Should I return it while I still can?
Launch-day buyers are inside the 14-day return window, so the option is real. If yours develops the bright line or that something-under-the-glass feeling, don’t wait — go in. If it’s fine, hinge care and a case are reasonable, and we’ll update this post as the picture clears.

Different problem — a colored line down a regular iPhone screen, no folding involved? That one’s usually the display itself letting go, and it’s covered in our iPhone green line guide.
